More than you might expect
Charlton Farm is not a sad place, although sadnesses are faced together
Charlton Farm aims to help and support families who face the emotional and physical strain of caring for children who, sadly, are not expected to live into adulthood.
Many people think a children's hospice is only for the end of a child's life. Most of the time Charlton Farm is full of play, music, messy art and family meals. Families come to us for short breaks, often over many years, and we are also here for emergencies, for difficult times and at the end of life.
We usually care for families who live in Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset and West Wiltshire.
Care at Charlton Farm
Care shaped around your family
Every child and family is different, so the care we offer changes with you, from a first short break to support long into the future.
Short breaks
Regular stays for your child and the whole family, so everyone can rest, play and spend time together while our team takes care of the caring.
Emergency care
When things change suddenly, we can respond quickly, offering care and a calm place to be when it is needed most.
Symptom management
Specialist palliative care to help keep your child comfortable, working alongside the doctors and nurses who already know them.
Sibling support
Brothers and sisters have their own activities, days out and people to talk to, because their lives change too.
End of life care
Care in a peaceful, comfortable setting, with time and space for your family to be together.
Bereavement support
We stay alongside families for as long as they need us, with support for parents, siblings and grandparents.
Inside Charlton Farm
A real home-from-home
We do all we can to make sure that babies, children and young people have some of their favourite toys, games and DVDs waiting for them when they arrive. Exploration uncovers playrooms, teenagers-only rooms, a spa bath for relieving stiff joints and muscle spasm, a sensory room for chilling out and a soft play area for safe, trouble-free fun.
Choose a space to look around.
People often say 'I don't know how you do your job'. As a nurse, it's an absolute privilege to care for these children and families.
It was the first time we could properly relax, knowing that we could go down at any time to see Phoebe or call the team in the middle of the night to check in on her
For the whole family
Everyone is welcome here
Caring for a seriously ill child affects the whole family. At Charlton Farm, parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents can stay together and use all the facilities.
Our grounds
Fields, woodland and bluebells in spring
Charlton Farm has been converted from old farm buildings and barns, with the interiors purpose-built and equipped with the children in mind.
Set in grounds that once belonged to the Tyntesfield Estate, our neighbours are fields and mature woodland. Courtyards, gardens, an orchard and play spaces are designed so children of all ages and abilities can get outside.
